DC Nabs Brian Michael Bendis From Marvel Comics

In one of the most shocking defections in comic book history, Marvel veteran Brian Michael Bendis will be moving to DC Comics with a multi-year, multi-faceted deal. Bendis is one of the most well-known comic book authors working right now, thanks to his acclaimed works on books like Daredevil, New Avengers, and Ultimate Spider-Man. It will be interesting to see what his first DC title will be.

During a tweet, DC gave the writer plenty of praise, calling him one of the premier writers of the industry and credited him for creating unforgettable stories. The company isn't wrong with that statement, with stories like Secret Invasion, Death of Spider-Man, and Avengers vs X-Men in his resume. He also created Jessica Jones, who is currently the star of an excellent Netflix series, and gave minor characters like Luke Cage and Spider-Woman the spotlight in his Avengers books.

While Bendis is well-known, he also has a number of detractors. The writer has been known for ruining characters like Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in Civil War II. He also tends to be overly talky, to the point that his comics can feel like exposition dumps and his characters can sound alike.

However one feels about the writer, there's no doubt that this is a big get for DC Comics. Given his talky nature, he would be a natural fit for Constantine/Hellblazer or The Flash. Bendis also tends to specialize with younger characters, so he can do good work on Teen Titans or Super Sons. Expect his first book to be announced soon.

Bendis is currently working on Invincible Iron Man and Spider-Man for Marvel. It's not clear how long he will be with these books, now that he's exclusive to DC.
