DC Comics Gets Power Share of August 2016 Comic Market

Marvel may be leading in terms of its cinematic universe, but DC is holding strong in the arena of comic books. And for August 2016, "holding strong" may even be an understatement.

The August 2016 market share for comics has already been released, and it seems that even though Marvel had almost 20 comics more than what DC has published (93 to 75), the top 10 comics ranked in August were basically dominated by DC Comics—with just one slot shy of taking the entire board.

The ranked listing (via Bleeding Cool) showed that Harley Quinn #1 at the top spot. There's also All-Star Batman #1, Suicide Squad #1, Suicide Squad Rebirth #1, two volumes of Batman, Justice League #2, Harley Quinn #2, and Supergirl Rebirth #1. Amazing Spider-Man #16 did make it to the top 4 as the only Marvel and only other title outside of the DC Comics franchise in the rankings.

Among the top 10 Graphic Novels and trade paperbacks, DC Comics beat out Marvel by just one comic. It should be noted that four of the top five spots did belong to Marvel, with DC having the second top spot (Batman: The Killing Joke Special Edition) and the latter half of the charts.

The report also noted that DC had risen by as much as almost 20% from April to August in terms of dollar share, as it now sits tight with 39.27% of dollar share and 44.59% sales share. It seems that much of this was the result of the DC Rebirth. Whether or not we'll see the same growth for Marvel with its planned Marvel Now relaunch sometime in fall 2016 remains to be seen.
