DC Comics Artist Calls Captain Marvel A Disgrace And Poor Attempt At Wonder Woman

Captain Marvel might be getting a lot of love and support from DC's Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins, but it looks like a former DC Comics artist isn't quite happy with the film.

According to a report by Cosmic Book News,Green Lantern and Flash: Rebirth artist Van Sciver just recently released multiple videos reviewing Captain Marvel, and in the reviews, the illustrator echoes some of the most wide-spread complaints against the film.

Not only does Sciver complain that Carol Danvers isn't that great of a character, but he also claims that Captain Marvel was MCU's poor attempt at creating their very own version of Wonder Woman.

"It isn't possible to make an excellent Captain Marvel movie, one that can actually fulfill the hopes and dreams of women everywhere. Why? Because Captain Marvel isn't just that good of a character. Captain Marvel is a character built on convenience, built on the desire of Marvel Comics to virtue signal that they, too, have their own Wonder Woman," Sciver says in his video. "Their own standalone powerful female character that is not connected to any teams like the Fantastic Four, X-Men or Avengers, or anything like that — somebody who has been beloved for decades and decades. They don't have anything like that."

To Sciver, social obligation has turned Carol Danvers into a "Mary Sue" that serves as a vehicle for feminist values. An "avatar for feminism" if you may. Marvel didn't imply that the character had any struggles or flaws because Captain Marvel has to be an icon for feminism.

"You don't want to take a character like this and imply that she has difficulty, flaws, that she could get easily beaten up, that this can happen and that can happen. There is no story arc for Captain Marvel because that would imply that women have problems," the artist says.

Of course, Sciver isn't the only one complaining about Captain Marvel. Right now the film sits at an average 79% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's audience score on the site also comes up at a tepid 63%.

Still, despite these numbers, Captain Marvel has been nothing short of a commercial success, winning more than $400 million at the global box office during its opening weekend.

Captain Marvel is currently screening in cinemas.
