Dave Gibbons Working On Annotated 'Watchmen' Project

Watchmen has been a hot topic as of late, with Doctor Manhattan taking on Superman during the 12-issue Doomsday Clock event and an HBO show in production. Even without all of that, the series is still considered by many to be the greatest comic book ever produced, thanks to the stellar writing of Alan Moore and wonderful art by Dave Gibbons. Though Moore wants nothing to do with Watchmen these days, Gibbons has some interest in the product.

Recently, Gibbons was asked by Comic Book if the artist had anything Watchmen-related planned. It turns out he does, as the artist will be providing illustrations and sharing his thoughts in the annotated Watchmen, with author Leslie Klinger. Like other analytical books, this project will attempt to dissect the series and see what makes it tick, and why so many people love it.

Those unaware of Klinger have nothing to worry about, since the author has made similar annotations for Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, and Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Having Gibbons supply scripts and sketches should add some appeal to the book, so fans might want to keep tabs on this product when it comes out.

However, it seems like the artist won't be part of the upcoming HBO show that Damon Lindelof teased. This is what he had to say:

"But as far as movies or TV series are concerned, I really don't know anything about it. I'm going to be interested to see what comes up and if there is a way to make such things work, I'd like to see it."

Gibbons will likely get credit for working on the original source material, but it looks like he won't be involved with the actual project. Fans can only hope that the series is faithful to the source material, or at the least, has the same drive and spirit that made the comic series a favorite of many.
