Damen Lindelof Says His Watchmen TV Series Won’t Be An Adaptation Of Moore’s Comics

Alan Moore fans were pretty excited when HBO announced that it was working on an adaptation of the legendary comic book writer's award-winning comic book series Watchmen. Sure, Zack Snyder already adapted Watchmen into a movie of the same name back in 2009, but many comic book fans felt like the series' story was too complex to cram into one movie. Many believed that having the comics turned into a television series would actually be better for Watchmen.

However, it seems like we won't be getting a Watchmen comic book adaptation after all. Series director Damon Lindelof has just recently confirmed that his Watchmen series won't be adapting the iconic 12-issue miniseries by Moore or Zack Snyder's film.

Taking to Instagram, Lindelof just announced to fans that he won't be "adapting" the comics that Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons created together. According to the director, the comics are "sacred ground" that simply can't be "reproduced" or "rebooted." Instead, Lindelof wants to work on an original "remix."

Here's part of what Lindelof wrote in his post:

"We have no desire to to 'adapt' the twelves issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted. They will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we'd be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament ... To be clear. Watchmen is canon."

The director makes an interesting point. Moore always distanced himself from adaptations of his work, turning his back on Hollywood and the riches that come along with it. Though fans might be disappointed to hear that Lindelof won't be adapting Watchmen, they'll be glad to know that the director has Moore's wishes in mind.

The Watchmen series doesn't have a release date just yet but we'll let everyone know as soon as we get word.
