Cyberpunk 2077 Band Didn't Know Keanu Reeves Would Play Johnny Silverhand

Cyberpunk 2077 may not have been the roaring success we were all hoping it would be but there is little doubt that it had the best guest star. We learned early on that Keanu Reeves would play Johnny Silverhand, an NPC who is the frontman for a punk band Samurai in the CD Projekt Red game. However, the actual band who would play the group had no idea that the Matrix 4 star was involved.

Dennis Lyxzen is the frontman of the band Refused, which portrayed Samurai in Cyberpunk 2077. Lyxzen himself provided the voice of Johnny in the game but in an interview with Inverse, he admitted he had no idea he would be sharing the role with Reeves.

"When we wrote the songs, we didn't know that it was Keanu playing Johnny Silverhand," Lyxzen said. "It was all super secretive and we didn't find out until he was introduced at some gaming event and came out to Chippin' In and I'm like, ‘Holy s--t, is that him? That's wild!'"

Reeves' involvement isn't the only thing that was kept a secret from Lyxzen and his band. The frontman he is "not a gamer" and wasn't aware that the crew behind Cyberpunk 2077 were Refused fans who wanted the whole band to be involved.

"I didn't know anything about it. So I just kind of passed it on to my management and they were like, 'Holy s--t — this is big time!' It turned out that both the director of the game [Adam Badowski] and the whole team were huge fans. The original idea was for them to create music, and then for me to sing it. Then they asked, ‘do you think you can do this with Refused?'"

This is truly an awesome story about how the music for Cyberpunk 2077 came to be. Needless to say, we understand why Refused was so thrilled to be part of the project.

What did you think of the music in Cyberpunk 2077? Sound off in the comments below.
