Cuphead's Nintendo Switch Jump Was Microsoft's Idea And Things Are About to Get Much Crazier

It seems that you have Microsoft to thank for the release of Cuphead on the Nintendo Switch after all.

Daniel Bloodworth of Easy Allies, who spoke to one of the developers at the 2019 Game Developers Conference, revealed that it was actually Microsoft who approached StudioMDHR and asked if they were interested in creating a Switch version of the game. "Crazy stuff," he commented.

Indeed, it was a surprising move on Microsoft's part because the company is essentially sharing to Nintendo the lifetime exclusivity they scored for that game. This goes to show that Xbox head Phil Spencer was dead serious when he said they wanted to push cross-play and expand their player base.

The revelation has many harking back to the rumor that leaked this plan all along. If it is indeed coming to pass as the source claims, and it looks like it will, Microsoft is going to at least one other Xbox exclusives on the Nintendo Switch in the near future.

That game is no other than Ori and the Blind Forest. Take note that Microsoft also teased "more games" will follow suit after Cuphead. In fact, the original rumor claims that a major Microsoft franchise is also crossing over. There's no specific information on that, but it is heavily speculated that the scrapped game Scalebound by PlatinumGames might be resurrected for the Switch.

At the moment, however, Microsoft and Nintendo are still in the "early stage" of implementing Xbox Live features into the Nintendo Switch version of Cuphead. The changes should be made in a "post-launch update" and the game should be available "in the coming months."

Bloodworth did confirm that the Switch release also led to improvements across the other versions of the game. An update on the Xbox One version meant to decrease load times will be released after Cuphead makes its Nintendo jump.
