Chernobyl Showrunner to Make Last of Us Series for HBO

With Uncharted moving forward with director Ruben Fleischer, it looks like another Naughty Dog property is getting the live-action treatment with HBO.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chernobyl's Craig Mazin is teaming up with HBO to develop a series based on The Last of Us. What's more, Mazin will be joined by game director Neil Druckmann who will also be on board as an executive producer and EP.

Knowing how video game adaptations don't usually work out, it's very interesting what HBO is trying to do, giving Druckmann the main part when it comes to developing the series. Naughty Dog also had this to say about the team-up:

After Game of Thrones managed to disappoint waves of fans, Chernobyl was considered HBO's ‘apology' and was a critically acclaimed show. Having Mazin work on something like The Last of Us is definitely interesting, counting on how bleak and dark the story could be.

I guess now, people are wondering who would be cast in the parts of Ellie and Joel. Then again, what if the show is planning on focusing on a completely different era of the story, just like the Uncharted movie is? I think it's probably for the best so that fans won't have something to compare the series to. I'd suggest they can cover what happened to Joel before he met Ellie, but maybe they can focus on Ellie's story before the events of The Last of Us Part II. What if this series is Part III? I'm just spit-balling here.

No release date has been set for The Last of Us series, but The Last of Us Part II comes out for PlayStation on May 29.
