George Romero's original Night of the Living Dead  has been scaring horror fans and inspiring filmmakers for 47 years after its release in 1968. Now, there is a crowdfunding campaign for an animated version of the movie called, Night of the Living Dead: Darkest Dawn.

DreadCentral reports that the project group hopes to raise $200,000 to allow animaters and the creative team to produce a full-length version of Romero's classic and expand it to a theatrical release. The production team looks solid with director Simon West (The Expendables 2) and a whole lot of great vocal talent including Tony Todd, Bill Moselesy and Tom Seizemore.

This is the story of a group of survivors fighting to stay alive when a mysterious plague unleashes the undead on New York City. Barricaded in an abandoned apartment building, the characters from the original film face new terror and question each other’s compassion and sense of humanity as they fight to stay alive against the army of the walking dead.

The trailer looks amazing and as a huge fan of George Romero's original Night of the Living Dead, I really hope the project crew can make this dream into a reality. The trailer shows a town infested with the living dead and a group of survivors running for their lives.  The zombie genre is by far my most favorite horror movie genre. What do you guys (and gals) think about this animates zombie remake.

Night of the Living Dead: Darkest Dawn is due to premiere at the Walker Stalker Fan Fest during San Diego Comic-Con on July 11. To contribute to this undead cause, check out their Indiegogo campaign site here.
