Captain Marvel Powers & Director Confirmations Discussed

There are still a few new faces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we're about to see the new one in Doctor Strange next month, Marvel has also been teasing the arrival of a character who will give another new experience for the MCU.

As a character who is already under the public eye the moment she was announced for the silver screen, Captain Marvel needs to be one of the "even better" titles. For one thing, she is the second woman in Avengers. Currently, the only female Avenger is Black Widow, and fans can use a refreshing break from all the testosterone going around.

When Marvel's Kevin Feige spoke with Vulture, he revealed a few of their plans for the new hero. In particular, he stated that the studio is already eyeing the end of the year for Captain Marvel to have a definite director.

"We've been meeting amazing filmmakers, but often the way we work, as was the case on Doctor Strange and most of our movies, is that we have a…I don't want to say a ‘roadmap,' but we have a general view of what the movie is and then we meet with filmmakers and share that with them and then they pitch it back to us in a better fashion."

This very much aligns with what Scott Derrickson said when he was explaining landing the job of directing Doctor Strange. This method does make the entire process more meticulous, but also more adherent to the Marvel Grand Plan.

If the creators are already well-informed about what they want for the character, and are able to tap talents who could go beyond what is in the general plan, then you can have a distinctive delivery for each of the Marvel super hero movies.

The goal, Feige says, is to ensure that each of the heroes in the MCU will have a great story to tell. That, and the fact that it should fit into the entire plans for the remaining movies. Combine this with Marvel's own vision of Captain Marvel, which Feige revealed was part of how they operated when looking for the movie's director.

"With Captain Marvel, there's so much potential in the comics and there have been so many incarnations of her powers and the characters who've had that mantle that we've been focusing in on exactly how do we tell her origin… Her powers are off the charts, and when she's introduced, then, to counterbalance that with someone who feels real. She needs to have a humanity to tap into, and Brie can do that."

Captain Marvel is planned for launch in theaters sometime in 2019.
