Captain Marvel Co-Creator Hated How the Skrulls Were Portrayed in the Film

If you've watched Captain Marvel, you'll know that the film actually sides with the Skrulls in the movie, making them out to be the oppressed race by the Kree. As it turns out, Roy Thomas, who had co-created Carol Danvers and thought up the Kree/Skrull war in the comics, was not a fan of the aliens' portrayal in the film.

Talking to Bleeding Cool, Thomas explained:

"Actually, the one thing I really hated in the film was turning the Skrulls into a peace-loving race, with the Kree as the heavies. As far as I'm concerned as the principal conceptualizer of the Kree/Skrull War (and I suspect Stan Lee and Jack Kirby would've agreed with me), the Skrulls and the Kree are each as bad as each other, as they say. Having the Skrulls all mushy and family-friendly at the end left a bad taste in my mouth… but I loved 'em for most of the movie, when they were doing shape-shifting stuff that looked (and as far as I'm concerned, were) downright evil."

While the Skrulls being the victims was an interesting "twist" in the film, I kind of agree with Thomas' take on their portrayal. At this point, audiences are more open to complicated superhero films (e.g. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), and having the Skrulls be the ‘good guys' is kind of convenient for the story, not giving Captain Marvel any qualms on who to root for.

If anything, though, Thomas thought Jude Law's Yon-Rogg was a saving grace of the film. He says:

"Still, Yon-Rogg turned out to be appropriately vile, and that's all well and good. I'm sorry the movie folks didn't use my improved Kree/Skrull War term for the Kree's Supreme Intelligence–i.e., Intelligence Supreme–but that's simply because ‘Supreme Intelligence' has always just sound to me like an IQ score, not the name of an intergalactic AI entity."

Like it or not, Captain Marvel was another huge hit, and everyone is expecting it to get past the $1 billion mark soon. Hopefully, when it comes to the sequel, she'll have a more emotional arc. Let's not also forget she has a team-up with the Avengers next month.
