Blu-ray Review: Doctor Strange

Blu-ray Review: Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange was another Marvel blockbuster success, and my personal favorite Marvel origin story movie. Today, we look at the recently released Doctor Strange blu-ray, released on February 28, 2017. For a full movie review, click here.

While the movie is most appreciated in full 3D Imax, the truly mind bending special effects of Doctor Strange translate well into the blu-ray format. Aside from outstanding special effects, the blu-ray has its fair share of extras, starting with a brief introduction by Director Scott Derrickson. This is followed by an in-depth audio commentary, which reveals plenty of hidden gems, which I’ll let you discover on your own. While the audio commentary is worthwhile, the best part of the blu-ray is getting to experience the most epic Marvel showdown of all time, Dormammu vs Doctor Strange. It's a scene worth repeating!

One of my favorite extras on the blu-ray is a nearly eight minute preview of upcoming Phase 3 Marvel movies, including Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Black Panther. You’ll get a peek at some footage of these films as well.

Aside from that, the blu-ray extras are pretty standard, including a look at costume and set design, with some interesting facts about the Cloak of Levitation, which seems to save Doctor Strange more often than the Ancient One. You’ll also get to see location filming insights, a look at the composing process, five deleted scenes, and a quite lengthy gag reel of four minutes. Conclusion: If you've enjoyed other Marvel movies, Doctor Strange doesn’t disappoint, and the same is true for the blu-ray extras. I really enjoyed the director commentary, and the gag reel is one of the best for any blu-ray. For those who haven't seen the movie, Doctor Strange features one of the greatest comic book showdowns of all time, and the blu-ray is worth a spot in your collection for that reason alone! So by the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, go get this blu-ray!
