Blade Runner 2049 Director “Made Peace” With Low Odds Of Film Succeeding

Though Blade Runner eventually become a Hollywood cult classic, Ridley Scott's original neo-noir science fiction film didn't immediately become a success when it first came out in 1982. Now, while many expect Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 to do significantly better, the director says that he's already accepted the fact that the Blade Runner sequel also has the potential to fail.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about Blade Runner 2049 and how the film has been the "biggest artistic challenge" of his career, Villeneuve talked about the conversation he had with the film's star Ryan Gosling and how they had both admitted that the odds of success were pretty slim.

"Ryan Gosling and I made peace with the idea that the chances of success were very narrow. I came on board because the script was very strong. But no matter what you do, no matter how good what you're doing is, the film will always be compared to the first, which is a masterpiece. So I made peace with that. And when you make peace with that, you are free."

"To take Ridley Scott's universe and try to make it my own was a really big task for me…He said, it's your movie. I'll be there if you need me, otherwise I'll be away. And I must say he was not there physically, but I felt his presence all the time, because I was dealing with his universe all the time."

Of course, with Blade Runner being an iconic film, it's pretty natural to find Villeneuve stressing himself out over Blade Runner 2049. However, with Harrison Ford back in and Oscar-nominated Gosling to boot, we're pretty sure that the upcoming science fiction movie's going to draw in a lot of viewers. It also helps that the film's already one of the most anticipated movies of 2017 too.

Blade Runner 2049 hits cinemas on October 6, 2017.
