Batman & Planet of the Apes Director Has a Plan for a Superhero Trilogy

It's not uncommon for a previously stand-alone movie to be stretched into a threequel to explore character dynamics and backstories. It would be more efficient if it has been planned as a threequel, though reality, budget, and box office performance will always be issues to deal with in the industry.

That's why successful trilogies and sequels that were born from the original material alone are worth exploring--and the directors who are able to make that happen even more so.

This is probably one of the reasons why Matt Reeves is a favorite to helm DC Comics' Batman. Barring bad performance in the future of DC films, it's likely that The Batman movie starring Ben Affleck will follow in the footsteps of Wonder Woman, which pretty much has a sequel deal sealed. Speaking to Fandango, Reeves shared how he plans to create a trilogy for Batman--and it's similar to how he went about with the Apes trilogy:

"I have ideas about an arc, but really, the important thing is just to start. You have to start with a story that begins something. And I would be lying if I could tell you that the arcs of Apes was already planned out, because it simply wasn't; it's one of those things where that character was so potent, and the possibility was embedded from the beginning, but exactly how you've got from A to Z is not something that existed."

Perhaps the same route is in the cards for The Batman trilogy with Reeves now at the helm. Even if Batman v Superman may not have readily started a Batman trilogy, maybe the director's experience with trilogy-creation can help progress DC Comics' dark horse.

For now, we can look forward to Justice League (and its possible storyline for Batman), coming this November.
