Blizzard Entertainment released a brand new animated Overwatch short at Gamescon. It's called "The Last Bastion" and focuses on, you guessed it, Bastion. It's directed by Ben Dai. He describes the short as being about "an artificial intelligence programmed to do one thing, and one thing only—to fight—comes face-to-face with a choice to alter his destiny”, Kotaku reports.
You can see the video below:
A lot of viewers are comparing this short to Disney, but it reminded me of Studio Ghbli more than anything. The scenes of Bastion all overgrown with nature were actually pretty reminiscent of Castle in the Sky.
The short shows Bastions birdy-buddy, Ganymede, waking him up after a what seems to be a very long sleep. Now covered with forest overgrowth, he wanders the woods, but as the description indicates, his programming as a battle automaton inferferes a little with enjoying the view. A woodpecker triggers flashbacks to the war (in a way reminiscent of PTSD).
We see a cameo of another character, Reinhardt, during the war flashbacks. Mostly the video just focuses on gorgeous scenery and atmosphere. It's worth a watch. Bastion's not the most likeable robot, but this may serve to humanize him a little.
What do you think of the video? Was it well-made? Did it give you any feels for the battle bot? Or were you unmoved?
