Avengers: Infinity War Reveals The Mad Titan Thanos’ Heartbreaking Origin Story In The MCU

Thanos has often been referred to as the Mad Titan in the marketing campaign for Avengers: Infinity War and according to Marvel director Joe Russo, Thanos little prefix comes with a good reason.

Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently spoke with The Telegraph about their work on Marvel's two-part Avengers movie, and during the interview Joe went on to explain Thanos' origin story, revealing how Thanos earned his nickname as the Mad Titan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"He's from a planet called Titan. Many years prior to the film his planet was experiencing a cataclysmic shift," Joe said. "They were running out of resources, and they were overpopulated. Thanos made a recommendation that they exterminate half the population randomly in order to save the rest of the population. Of course, the Titans rejected his notion, branded him a mad man, exiled him, and the planet ended up dying."

Because of Titan's death, Thanos took it upon himself to bring balance to all other planets in the universe to avoid the demise of his own home.

"He has taken it upon himself to go planet-by-planet throughout the universe and wipe out half of the population of each planet as a way to correct the planet and bring it back into balance," the director went on to add.

Though the Russo brother's origin story in the film might be a whole lot different from the Mad Titan's origin story in the comics (in the comics Thanos decides to wipe out half of the universe to impress Death), it does add a sad touch to Thanos story, allowing fans to sympathize with the villain. It's going to be interesting seeing how Thanos tries to wipe out half of Earth in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4.

Avengers: Infinity War hits cinemas April 27. Avengers 4 makes its big debut on May 3, 2019.
