Avengers: Infinity War Director Admits Gamora’s Parallels With Lady Death

Marvel might not have had Lady Death for Thanos (Josh Brolin) to pine for in Avengers: Infinity War, however, the film did have the Mad Titan's "favorite daughter," Gamora (Zoe Saldana).

Though Gamora doesn't serve Infinity War the same way as Lady Death does in Jim Starlin's Infinity Gauntlet mini-series, she does help make Thanos seem more human in Marvel's two-part Avengers movie.

Speaking in an interview with Comic Book,Avengers: Infinity War co-director Anthony Russo admits that Thanos' Little One is actually the Marvel Cinematic Universe's representation of Lady Death, in some sort of sense.

"I don't think we would correlate [Gamora] and young Gamora directly to Lady Death, except for the fact that it is what Thanos cares about," the Russo brother explained during the interview. "We always want to run at the relationships that are growing and developing in the MCU and the fact that Gamora and Nebula were children of Thanos and the fact that they had this very oppressive relationship with him was just so exciting to us. It was such a rich area to mine. Sort of a perverse, abusive father-daughter relationship. It was... we had to run at that as storytellers. It's just a much more powerful motivation for Thanos and a more powerful relationship with Thanos."

It was an interesting direction for Marvel's two-part Avengers movie to have Gamora become Thanos' emotional tie-in Infinity War.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had a history of creating characters with troubled relationships with their fathers. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) had daddy issues, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) had cosmic daddy issues, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) had daddy issues and so did Nebula and Gamora. It makes sense that Infinity War would explore Thanos' relationship with his favorite daughter.

Avengers: Infinity War is currently screening in cinemas.
