James Cameron's Avatar was one of the biggest blockbusters to ever come out back in 2009, and news has it that the seasoned director is working on a bunch of sequels for the franchise. Cameron has just recently announced that Avatar 2 will be delayed once again, moving his second release date of December 2018 to a date further down the line.
In a statement released by Cameron (via ComicBookMovie) Cameron says:
"Well, 2018 is not happening. We haven't announced a firm release date. What people have to understand is that this is a cadence of releases. So, we're not making Avatar 2, we're making Avatar 2, 3, 4. It's an epic undertaking. It's not unlike building the Three Gorges dam. So I know where I'm going to be for the next eight years of my life. It's not an unreasonable time frame if you think about it. We're full tilt boogie right now. This is my day job and pretty soon we'll be 24-7. It's pretty exciting stuff. I wish I could share with the world. But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we're going to draw that curtain when the time is right."
The sequel was originally announced for a release Dec. 25 of this year before being pushed to 2018. Seeing that Cameron is a director who likes to take time and perfect his projects, I'm not complaining about where the Avatar franchise is headed in the future. He actually had the idea for Avatar back in the 90s, but he decided to put the project on hold until the tech could catch up with his cinematic vision. Though Cameron may take his time, the results are very much worth the wait.
There is no official release date for Avatar 2.
