Assassin’s Creed Movie Looking To Go Big Beyond Gaming Fans, But Not Big On Money

As a game, Assassin's Creed has made a name following a couple of installments. As a movie, it's taking its first dip with this year's movie of the franchise's name.

Ubisoft has shared its vision, specifically the plan to organically grow the franchise beyond games. Over at the Ubisoft Blog, the developer stated that the movie is the peak, which had been in the pipeline for years now.

What this also means is preparing the franchise to go beyond games and into an unknown audience. As Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Head of Content Aymar Azaiza sees it, the movie is a way to bring in newcomers without giving them the entire history of Assassin's Creed franchise in one go.

Of course, this is not the only means that the franchise has gone beyond gaming. It's first actual detour was a novel, and a pretty successful one, at least in introducing the lore to other non-gaming fans.

Even with plans to capture a wider audience beyond those that follow the franchise, Ubisoft did state that the movie is not meant to be a money-maker. Ubisoft Europe's boss Alain Corre told MCV that, instead of making money, it's meant to bring the brand closer using a new medium.

"It is a lot more a marketing thing, it is also good for the image of the brand. Although we will make some money, it is no the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin's Creed to more people. We have core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin's Creed games."

Assassin's Creed will be out in theaters on December 21. Directed by Justin Kurzel, it will star Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard.
