Are the Luthors preparing the way for the Legion of Superheroes to make an appearance in CW's Supergirl? That was what fans were asking after the 12th episode of the second season, entitled "Luthors," lined up a lot of easter eggs that could lead to that event. There were also a lot of hints of a backstory between Superman aka Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lex Luthor.
DC's number one villain still has to make an appearance in Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist)'s city, but his mother Lillian and sister Lena have become frequent guests. Lillian (Brenda Strong) walks the bad side and is allied with Cadmus while Lena (Katie McGrath0 has become BFF's with the Maid of Steel. In trying to win her daughter back Darth-Vader style, Lillian shows Lena some of the treasures that golden boy Lex has collected.
As Moviepilot has pointed out, one of them is the Persuader's atomic axe which can cut straight through titanium. Lex apparently got this trophy from the 31st century, the era of the Legion. Other easter eggs in earlier Supergirl episodes, including a Legion flight ring in the Fortress of Solitude, make it likely that Superman had also visited that era. Mix them all together, and both Superman and Lex had contact with the Legion. Was it in the 31st century perhaps that their alleged past friendship turned into all-out enmity?
A Legion appearance could answer that, and tie up all the loose plot holes. Mon-El (Chris Wood) might even have a significant role to play if this happens, because he was a member of the Legion in the comic books.
With more superpowered beings on the way to Kara's world, including a big bad super couple, things will certainly heat up.And that's fine. One alleged reason why Superman shows or movies don't last is that it's hard to find villains who can match the Man of Steel's might. Looks like CW's Supergirl has found a solution to that one.
