Aquaman Director James Wan Is Making Sure Arthur Curry Stands Out From Superman

Jason Momoa's Aquaman is getting his own standalone movie this year and it looks like director James Wan has been trying his best to make the Atlantean King stand out among the many heroes in the DC Extended Universe.

Speaking with ComicBook.com during one of the publication's Aquaman set visits, Wan opened up about how he was trying his best to differentiate Arthur Curry from the other members of the Justice League, especially from the golden boy Superman.

Though Aquaman and Superman naturally have their differences, the filmmaker was concerned that fans might see Arthur Curry as some sort of "Man of Steel underwater" because of some of the similarities they share.

"Well, I think firstly one thing I've been very cautious about doing is making sure that he isn't Superman," Wan explained. "From a story standpoint, there's a reason why Aquaman ultimately is powerful. He's strong because, like most Atlanteans, their bodies are built to withstand thousands of pounds of pressure, they live so far down. So when they come up, their body is... they're not aliens from another planet, but because of the physics of our planet and all that stuff, when they come up to the surface world their body can withstand really strong pressure. And so where bullets literally bounce off the Man of Steel, bullets can graze these guys and maybe break the skin, and break the flesh, but it doesn't necessarily penetrate because they their muscle mass and their body mass is much more dense. Even within the world of superheroes, I try to find a reason for why how he is the way he is. So he can get beaten up. When he goes up, surface world weapons may have a hard time taking him down, but Atlantian technology can cripple him for sure. It can really destroy him."

Of course, Wan shouldn't really worry. DC fans know a lot about Aquaman and his origin, and they know that the Atlantean King is miles away from becoming some sort of Superman in the ocean. Sure they might both be strong (which superhero isn't), DC's golden boy seems more of a boy scout whereas Aquaman has long to be perceived as a hot-headed, lone-wolf (well, at least in the Justice League animated series). The image of Aquaman's become even cooler with Game of Thrones' Jason Momoa playing the character.

Aquaman is set to make a splash when it premieres on December 21, 2018.
