The anticipation for the upcoming new Apple computers is getting higher each passing year. Now, there have been reports claiming that the Cupertino-based company is gearing up to release new Macs that feature that brand-new M2 chip later this year.

It has been more than a year since Apple announced its first in-house chip in November 2020 and quite some time since the debut of the tech giant’s M1 Pro and M1 Max. While there are no specific and confirmed details about the Apple M2 chip, speculations are rife that it would be an upgraded version of the M1 Pro chip.

Is Apple M2 Chip Slightly Faster Than Predecessors?

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman penned, in the Power On newsletter, that Apple is set to launch a 13-inch MacBook Pro 2022, Mac Mini 2022, 14-inch iMac 2022, and a redesigned MacBook Air 2022, all equipped with the rumored M2 chip. He claimed that the M2 chip would be slightly faster than M1.

Gurman also predicted that the Apple M2 chip and M1 chip would share the same eight-core architecture. However, the newer chip is said to have nine or ten graphics cores, which is an upgrade from its predecessor’s seven or eight.

Just like the M1 chip, Gurman claimed that Apple could release the M2 Pro and M2 Max in 2023. Not only that because he also projected the American tech giant to announce an M3 chip next year.

Most, if not all, Mac fans can recall that Apple decided to stop using Intel for its own silicon in 2020, which allowed the company to revamp the Mac. The tech giant, then, used its own A-series chips for iPhones and iPads. However, they had been offering Intel-powered Macs for more than a decade and a half.

Gurman also suggested that, aside from new Macs using M2 chip, Apple is also set to release a new Mac mini with an M1 Pro chip, a larger iMac Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max chip options, and a half-sized Mac Pro with the equivalent of either two or four M1 Max chips.

When Will New Apple Macs With M2 Chips Be Released?

Meanwhile, Mark Gurman shared that the next round of Mac announcements could happen in March, when the Tim Cook-led tech company is expected to hold its first-ever event in 2022. He also claimed he has been told that Apple is be releasing another line of Macs around May or June.

He wrote:

“Apple will want to drum up developer support for the super-powered Mac Pro chips, so I’d guess that the company wants to debut that machine as early as the WWDC event in June and ship it in the fall. A revamped MacBook Air would be a nice holiday seller, so it makes sense to release it around that time of year—even if Apple had originally planned to get it out the door at the end of 2021 or in early 2022.”

Gurman went on to say that the second round of Mac releases could center on the new iMac Pro and Mac Pro with “super-powered” versions of the M1 Max. All in all, the Bloomberg reporter claimed that techies could expect around seven new Apple Silicon-powered Macs this year.

Apple has yet to comment on Mark Gurman’s latest statements. So, these reports should be taken with a huge grain of salt until everything is proven true and correct.
