Anime Cast Of Ghost In The Shell Will Dub The Live-Action Version

Even though the live-action Ghost in the Shell is getting some flak for whitewashing characters, the production still doesn't stray too far from the source material. News has it that the cast of the original anime will be returning to dub the Japanese version of the movie.

The news comes from Japanese site Natalie (via Kotaku), and they say that Atsuko Tanaka, who voiced Major Kusanagi in the original 1995 anime, will be dubbing the Japanese for Scarlett Johansson's character, Major Meera. Other returning voice actors are Koichi Yamadera as Togusa and Akio Otsuka as Batou.

The director of the original Ghost in the Shell, Mamoru Oshii, also had this to say about the returning cast members:

"It's been a while since they've played these characters… I definitely want them to deliver performances they see fit. They're all pros, so there's nothing to worry about, and I can only say that this is something to look forward to."

I know that a lot of people are upset about the casting and change of setting for the live-action Ghost in the Shell, but fans just have to understand that Hollywood is a business, and casting Scarlett Johansson is bound to bring in an audience that hasn't even heard of the anime. If the movie does eventually become a bomb — which I hope it doesn't — people can always expect Hollywood to reboot it again in the next 10 years.

Ghost in the Shell is directed by Rupert Sanders, and it's slated for a release on March 31.
