A lot of audience members have mixed feelings for the live-action Maleficent movie. On one hand, Angelina Jolie is perfect for the role, but on the other, they turned one of Disney's most beloved and despicable villains into a misunderstood hero. Jolie is said to be working on the sequel already, and she believes it's something special.
Talking at the Telluride Film Festival (via GeekTyrant), Jolie says this about Maleficent 2:
"I am now the breadwinner for the family, so it's time. We have been working on the script and this is going to be a really strong sequel."
Jolie had just come out of directing her latest movie, First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Returns, and now she's said to want to come back to acting. Universal is said to have been in talks with her to play the Bride of Frankenstein, but so far it looks like nothing is set in stone.
In the Maleficent movie, the film made a full flip and revealed that Maleficent was a misunderstood guardian of the forest who was betrayed and tricked by the father of Aurora a.k.a. Sleeping Beauty. The movie changed it so that Maleficent grew a love for Aurora as she watched over her, and it was her own kiss that woke Aurora from her deep sleep.
Some fans preferred the pure evil of Maleficent from the original Disney animated film, and thought it was a travesty that they changed her backstory so drastically for Maleficent. That's like revealing that the Emperor was the good guy all along and Yoda was a force of evil.
No official release date has been set for Maleficent 2.
