Legendary anime director and manga author Katsuhiro Otomo made an appearance at the comics festival Angouleme in Paris as Guest of Honour. At the press conference, Otomo surprised attendees when he suggested that a new adaptation of AKIRA is in the works.
When asked about the possibility that he would expand AKIRA beyond the original 1988 movie, Otomo said that a series was currently "under study" and that he could not divulge more information at this time.
The news was reported by a French-language manga site called Manga News and Otomo was presumably talking Japanese at that time, so some keep in mind that the news went through different levels of translations so misunderstandings might have changed what he actually meant.
An AKIRA TV series would be awesome. It's one of the greatest cyberpunk manga/anime of all time. And I hope that live-action AKIRA movie will start production soon. There's a rumor that Christopher Nolan is involved in that.
