18 Life Lessons That Harry Potter Taught Our Generation

Our generation grew up on Harry Potter – and along the way J.K. Rowling helped us mature into the (almost?) adults we are today. Here are some of the lessons we’ve learned from Hogwarts.

  1. People aren’t always what they seem, or what you expect them to be.

  2. Your friends will save your life, one way or another.

  3. It’s okay to be the smart kid – there are people who value intelligence in a friend just as much as athleticism.

  4. Just because you’ve had a big fight doesn’t mean your friendship is over.

  5. A little bit of humility can solve a lot of problems.

  6. Trust your instincts.

  7. Ultimately, only you are in control of your own fate.

  8. Right and wrong can be fuzzy. But you won’t be happy unless you do what you think is right.

  9. Sometimes the best way to end up mates for life, is to start out as just mates (a.k.a the friendzone is not to be feared).

  10. Growing up is awkward. There’s absolutely no way to avoid this. You just have to learn to deal with all of the awkwardness. And then remembering that awkwardness.

  11. You choose where to call home - you're not fated to the one you were born into.

  12. Just because someone looks like a bad guy, doesn’t mean they are.

  13. “Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.” –Albus Dumbledore

  14. Your choices and your actions define you, not your innate talents or abilities.

  15. Judge a person based on how they treat their inferiors (those they don’t necessarily have to treat well).

  16. There is a time to listen to authority figures, who are older and probably wiser. And there’s a time to not obey authority. The key is to learn when.

  17. Your friends and family will always be your first line of defense.

  18. Love is the most powerful weapon of all. With love, you can conquer the world.

(And a little bit of magic doesn't hurt)
