10 Most Powerful Comic Book Characters in the Marvel Universe

Based on all the attention Thanos has been getting in the MCU, one might think he is one of the most powerful beings in the universe. And while that may be true on some level, he is greatly outmatched by these top ten most powerful characters in the Marvel Universe.

Who is the strongest character, who has the power to create and destroy all of existence? Continue to list to see the top 10 most powerful Marvel comic book characters.

  1. Mad Jim Jaspers

Mad Jim Jaspers is regarded by many to be Marvel's most powerful non cosmic being. He is nearly a god within all of reality, and can lose his physical body and still maintain his consciousness, while being able to bend reality any way he wants. He even has the ability to move between different Marvel Universe's.

Jim has only one weakness that stops him from being near omnipotent, and that is that he can only manipulate existing realities. Mad Jim was defeated by being taken to a void or empty universe. With no reality to change or distort, he was easily defeated there.

  2. Franklin Richards

Franklin Richards is mostly portrayed as a child and supporting character in the Fantastic Four. Though inexperienced and naive, Franklin's abilities exceed that of Omega level mutants.

Franklin has insane powers, that dwarf almost all other beings. He has the ability to create his own universe and save or destroy lives instantly. He can warp reality as he sees fit. Franklin's powers are so overwhelming it attracted the Celestials (God like beings) who tried to destroy him.

While Mad Jim Jaspers ability to warp reality exceeds that of Franklin, Jim can't create his own reality from nothing. In-fact, he was destroyed by being taken to a void or a place without a reality. There he was easily defeated. Franklin on the other hand can create reality from nothing, which gives him power few others have.

As you can see, Franklin held his own against the Celestials, and actually ended up winning that fight. He also has a multitude of psionic powers, including, telepathy, telekinesis, energy blasts, precognition, and astral projection.

Another sign of his strength, is that he has his own herald. For those familiar with the Silver Surfer, a being of immense power, know that he is merely a herald for the mighty Galactus, a planet eater. Stan Lee, creator of most of the Marvel Universe, has stated that in his opinion, Galactus is the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe. So who is Franklin Richard's herald? None other than Galactus himself.

  3. Protege

Protege nearly became one of the most powerful beings in the entire Marvel Universe. He has the ability to mimic the powers of others and gain them for his own. His mimic abilities have no apparent limit, as he was even able to gain the powers of cosmic entities, such as the Beyonder, whom he dueled to a draw. The only downside to his mimicry, is that he has to see the ability manifested before being able to duplicate it himself.

After being exposed to the Living Tribunal and other powerful cosmic entities, Protege declared himself the new One Above All (God). It was not last, as Scathan the Approver stepped in and restrained him, and the living Tribunal absorbed him into itself to prevent Protege from harming the multiverse.

  4. The Living Tribunal

The Living Tribunal is an incredibly powerful being in the cosmic hierarchy. It acts as a governing body for all of Marvel's multiverse. When the cosmic balance is disturbed in a universe, The Living Tribunal appears to cast judgment and restore balance. When it passes judgment, it's will is enacted and takes form immediately, without question.

The Living Tribunal manifests itself with 3 faces, and a 4th hidden face. Its front face embodies equity, the partially hidden face represents revenge, and the fully hidden face represents necessity. The 4th face is rarely seen, but is a mirror that reflects the beholder.  The Tribunal uses these personalities to cast judgment on an individual or planet. If any one aspect of itself disagrees on the judgment, than it will not take action.

The Tribunal's powers do not exist on any scale or measurable level, and the entity has existed since the beginning of the Marvel Universe (it even prevents the powers of the Infinity Gauntlet from being used in unison). Very few have ever fought against the Tribunal to a draw, with Protege being one of the very few examples. Thanos with the Heart of the Universe once defeated the Tribunal, but it was likely just a weaker avatar representation, and Marvel's Executive Editor stated that the story was not part of Marvel's continuity and had no actual bearing on the Marvel Universe.

  5. Scathan the Approver

Scathan the Approver, is a mysterious celestial that has appeared on rare occasion in the Marvel Universe. One of his most notable appearances that demonstrate his superior powers is when The Living Tribunal called for his help when judging the case of Protege. While The Living Tribunal was unable to completely subdue Protege on its own, Scathan was able to restrain him.

It is incredibly rare for Scathan to take any action in the Marvel Universe. As The Living Tribunal states, "Scathan the Approver comes only to observe and record my judgment..." Very little is known about the celestial, other than that his powers are well respected, even by the most powerful of beings in the multiverse.

  6. Pre-Retcon Molecule Man

Owen Reece, AKA Molecule Man, is the most powerful human being in the Marvel universe. He is often cast as a villain, but sometimes portrayed as a hero. Molecule Man started as a lowly lab technician working with some radioactive equipment, unremarkable in many ways. After making a mistake (later proved to be purposeful by the Beyonders), the equipment exploded and Molecule Man was doused with radioactive particles. Instead of killing him, the blast gave him power over the building blocks of the universe.

Molecule Man has the ability to manipulate all matter on a molecular level. He can mold matter at his desire, turn matter into dust, and convert matter from one substance to another. In the classic comics, he is recognized as one of the two most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. As with any comics that span decades, his power level fluctuates overtime, but at his height, he is a formidable opponent to any being that crossed his path.

  7. Pre-Retcon Beyonder

"I pretend nothing! I am SUPREME!! In my native realm I WAS the universe!" ~ Beyonder

In his own universe, Beyonder operates as a knower of all things with complete power over his surroundings. Once outside his home universe, he must learn about his new surroundings (lacks omnipotence), but still displays supreme powers. He can scan the thoughts of an entire planet, bend reality at his whim, erase the memories of everyone instantly, and more. His will is incarnated into the world by the thought of it.

Beyonder has displayed few weaknesses, but once was temporarily tricked out of some of his powers by Doctor Doom, and exhausted from a battle with Phoenix Force Rachel Summers.

  8. Tiamut The Dreaming Celestial

Tiamut is regarded as one of the most powerful celestials beings in the universe, beyond the level of even Galactus (who would have to have fed on many a planet to put up a fight). The being has an incalculable level of control of cosmic energy and can survive attacks of virtually any scale. He can teleport vast distances instantly, and rearrange matter to a certain degree. Tiamut is recognizable by his incredible size, towering over 2000 feet in height.

  9. The Fulcrum

What does one do when you are nigh omnipotent and have time to spare? Well, the Fulcrum, who goes by the name "Jack", runs a Bar that eternals visit in the afterlife.

The Fulcrum is believed to be a representation of Jack Kirby. He is all powerful and all knowing.

  10. The One Above All

Not to be confused with the celestial One Above All, The One Above All is assumed to be the creator of all life in the multiverse, TOAA is the supreme being in all of Marvel. TOAA has all powers, abilities, and knowledge within the realm of Marvel comic books without reservations.

The One Above All has made 6 appearances so far in the multiverse, which include 3 in Avengers A.I, once is Ghost Rider, once in the Fantastic Four, and once in Spider-Man.
