This new anime is an interesting series that somewhat defies genre conventions. At first glance, it may seem like “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” anime in the vein of K-on, though it’s not entirely accurate to place it in that genre.

Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night is a new anime by Doga Kobo, the studio behind hit shows like Oshi no Ko and Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie.

Despite the title, this series is not about jellyfish or any sea creatures. Instead, it follows four girls who form an anonymous artist group named JELEE.

The members include illustrator Mahiru Koziki, former idol Nonoka Tachibana, VTuber Nox Ryugasaki, and music composer Kimura-chan.

This anime is set mainly in Tokyo, with several well-known locations with Tokyo’s trendy Shibuya district being the series’ main setting.

Aside from well-known locales, the series also features big-name VAs. These include Miku Ito (Miku in The Quintessential Quintuplets), Rie Takahashi (Megumin in KonoSuba), and Miyu Tomita (Miko Iino in Kaguya-sama: Love is War).

While the series isn’t exactly dominating spring 2024 over big shows like Kaiju No. 8 and Mushoku Tensei, it has so far stayed in the top 10 of Reddit’s weekly anime discussions.

Is There a Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night Manga?

Doga Kobo’s latest anime is an original series, meaning it’s not based on an existing manga. This is unlike most of the studio’s projects.

Interestingly, there is a Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night manga which released its first chapter on April 7, the same day as the anime’s premiere.

This manga is not the source material. Instead, it’s an adaptation of the anime that’s also made by series creator JELEE.

Where to Read the Jellyfish Can’t Swim Manga

In Japan, the manga began serialization on April 7 in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket. For now, there’s no official English release for the manga, nor is there word on release plans for it internationally.

Along with the manga, there’s also a light novel adaptation that’s set to be released on May 20, 2024.

As for the anime, Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night is getting new episodes weekly on HIDIVE in the US and other select regions.
