Where Did the Raggedy Ann Dolls Come From? Dawn and Edmund's Childhood

One of the most prominent elements of the second season of Prime's Them: The Scare series showed the Raggedy Ann dolls that Detective Dawn Reeve (played by Deborah Ayorinde) and Edmund Gaines (Luke James) kept when their mother left them.

While Edmund kept his doll, Dawn's adoptive mother, Athena (Pam Grier), threw it away to break one of her remaining connections to her brother.

Keep in mind that Dawn was only three at the time, which made the manipulation a lot easier.

However, did you know that the red-haired dolls have a deeper meaning in Them: The Scare? They're far more than simple horror devices.

What the Raggedy Ann Dolls Mean in Them: The Scare

The Raggedy Andy dolls used in the series inspired the supernatural entity that Edmund Gaines gave himself up to.

This entity ended up becoming a serial killer in the series, whose method always brutally crushed its victim's bones.

However, what makes the doll even more crucial to the series is the fact that it has racist roots. Considering that Them: The Scare also tackles racism unconventionally, the utilization of the dolls makes sense.

The Raggedy Ann dolls historically appropriate blackface imagery for the white dolls. Apart from this, the softness of the dolls somehow encouraged violence as the children played with them.

In this case, the dolls represent how they influence the children. Edmund's pent-up emotions manifested into the demonic force that is the Raggedy Andy aka the red-haired man entity that became the serial killer in the series.
