Train to the End of the World continues to surprise viewers with unsettling moments. From Zenjiro’s wibble-wobble surgery to people growing mushrooms on their heads, here are the most disturbing moments in Train to the End of the World!

Spoiler Warning: This article contains spoilers from Train to the End of the World, so proceed with caution.

  1. Episode 3: Fast-Growing Bitter Melons

If you despise bitter melons, you'll probably find the third episode, in which the bitter melons suddenly began to grow rapidly, particularly distressing.

Some of the girls enjoy the bitter melons, while others are sick of them.

However, thanks to these bitter melons, they were able to defend themselves against the mushroom heads, who want them to stay in Higashi-Agano until they die.

The moment in which Akira Shinonome fights the mushroom heads with bitter melons will be remembered, but it is also terrifying.

The way the vines rapidly crawl to envelop the train is a nightmare come true for those who hate vegetables.

  2. Episode 1: Bloody Handprints in the Supply Caravan

In the first episode, Shizuru and the girls waited for the supply caravan to arrive.

They were all waiting for their requested items, which could only be obtained from the outside via the supply caravan. After all, the distance between rail stations has dramatically changed.

Strangely, one of the supply trucks has bloody handprints on it. The characters appeared to be used to seeing it because they didn't even ask about it, making it even more distressing.

So far, there is no explanation for the hand prints, but we suspect that the supply caravan has been through something horrific, which Shizuru and the others will possibly encounter.

  3. Episode 1: Yoka Wins the Right to Launch 7G

The first episode of Train to the End of the World is quite peculiar and unsettling.

We saw how a dubious technological company swept a high school student off her feet, informing her that she had won the opportunity to launch 7G, which they claimed would be Japan's retribution on other advanced countries.

Yoka was completely oblivious the entire time, while adults compelled her to do something she didn't want to do. She was force-fed information she was unaware of, and the adults took advantage of this.

Now, following the 7G catastrophe, Yoka is missing, and there are no hints (except for a newspaper picture) to tell viewers whether she is still alive.

  4. Episodes 4 and 5: When in Inariyama

In episodes 4 and 5, Reimi and Shizuru visited a peculiar city in search of a physician who could help them fix Akira.

But they later discover that this peculiar city turned out to be a small town where little people reside.

Reimi and Shizuru appeared to be giants invading the city, and toy-like soldiers quickly arrived to attack them.

After being tranquilized, Reimi and Shizuru were bound to the chopper's blades and informed that their skeletons would be shown at the boss' headquarters.

  5. Episode 3: Residents with Mushrooms on Their Heads

In Higashi-Agano, the girls were greeted by seemingly friendly individuals who were relieved to find them in excellent health.

They were warm and welcoming, but odd mushrooms grow on top of their heads, which Akira finds repulsive.

During their stay, the mushroom heads permitted the girls to stay in one of their vacant houses and even fed them mushroom cuisine.

As it turns out, the mushroom heads are trying to persuade the girls to stay in Higashi-Agano permanently while growing mushrooms on their heads.

  6. Episodes 4 and 5: Akira’s Mushroom Problem

Without Akira, Shizuru, Reimi, and Nadeko would have also sprouted mushrooms on their heads.

She was right not to trust the mushroom heads in Higashi-Agano, despite the other girls' insistence that it was all in her brain.

However, in episodes 4 and 5, Akira has mushrooms growing from her behind. She was scared to show it to her friends at first, but the abrupt change in her demeanor threw everyone off.

Reimi was able to pull the mushrooms out of Akira's behind, but she did not return to normal. She not only lost the strength to move, but her head also feels empty and clouded.

In the end, it took so much effort for Reimi and Shizuru to turn her back to normal.

  7. Episode 1: Adults Turning into Animals

In Agano, Shizuru and the others are aware that the adults are turning into animals.

No matter where they are, as long as they are from Agano, they will be unable to escape their destiny to transform into animals when they reach the appropriate age.

What’s disturbing is that Shizuru speculates that the residents who have been turned into animals will lose their minds and memories in the long run and that they will become real animals if the 7G situation continues. Yikes!

  8. Episode 5: Zenjiro’s Wibble-Wobble Surgery

What’s wrong with Zenjiro? He has been helping the girls on their journey for five minutes each day, but his wibble-wobble surgery is preventing him from doing the best he can.

Worse, Zenjiro can’t go far from Agano or he will have unbearable headaches.

Zenjiro is a scenic hallmark of Agano in that he acts like a choo-choo train, in addition to his weird way of walking.

As it turns out, some of the people responsible for the 7G incident performed surgery on his brain, which messed him up.

He used to be so tall and handsome, but when he came back to Agano, he’d become unable to say anything other than "choo-choo.”

  9. Episode 4: Passing through the Craziest Train Stations before Ikebukuro

Shizuru, Akira, Nadeko, and Reimi have traveled through some of the most odd and distressing train stations since leaving Agano.

After episode 5, there are 21 stops left, which means the girls will have to overcome even more bizarre train stations to reach Ikebukuro.

From a train station where people transformed into golf balls to humans transforming into sentient Jizo statues, the creators of the show are very skilled at shocking viewers with their wild ideas.
