Marvel found its Maria Rambeau in Lashana Lynch, but before the British actress took the role, DeWanda Wise was supposed to play Carol Denver’s best friend in the 2019 Captain Marvel. However, she left the project before the production began, and Wise has now broken her silence about the real reason behind her exit.

Wise was cast as Maria Rambeau in January 2018 but was forced to part ways with the project in March of the same year before the filming started that Spring.

At the time, it was revealed that her departure was due to scheduling conflicts with the production of She’s Gotta Have It Season 2.

However, some couldn’t help but notice Wise’s words when she said making a Marvel movie was her “own personal nightmare.” So, what’s the truth about her exit?

DeWanda Wise Explains Her Captain Marvel Departure

In an interview with The Direct, Wise clarified her reason for leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.

She explained, “I had to exit because it conflicted with Season 2 of She's Gotta Have It.”

She then addressed the claims that her departure had something to do with Marvel’s filmmaking process, stressing that her comment wasn’t exclusive to the franchise.

“That was a funny headline,” she continued. “It was just both of those things were true at one time. You know what I mean? It was like, can—That was always my question. You know, the concern about acting in blockbusters is not exclusive to Marvel. It's acting in blockbusters.”

The 39-year-old praised the Marvel actors’ performance, calling Robert Downey Jr. “extraordinary” and Hugh Jackman making her want to join the action.

Hence, it’s not the filming process that made her leave Captain Marvel. If truth be said, she would be willing to stop doing indie movies to see what these Marvel guys were doing.

So, when asked if she would join a Marvel movie in the future, she said, “Yeah, if the chance came and it was meaty enough.”

In 2022, Wise found it “very disappointing” losing the chance to play Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel.

But if there’s one role she wants to do in the Marvel universe, it's the X-Men’s Storm.

She told The Movie Dweeb (via ComicBook Movie) that it was “the only Marvel character” she was interested in playing.

Though it remains to be seen if Wise will soon make her MCU debut, Marvel Studios is reportedly planning an X-Men reboot.

This is close to happening now, as Disney has acquired the rights to the X-Men from 20th Century Fox.

Several mutants, such as Professor X, Beast, and Ms. Marvel, have already entered the MCU, and it looks like this project will soon come to fruition.
