What Makes Action Scenes Suck in Films, and What Makes Them Good - Video Essay


Sam and Niko created an insightful video essay that discusses the elements that make action scenes great, and describes what makes them suck. It highlihgts footage from The Matrix, Mad Max: Fury Road, Edge of Tomorrow, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Star Wars, and other popular action-packed films to show us the difference between "showing action" and "implying action".

I like how the video makes insightful points such as how it's important to show the geometry and the space to understand why they are making decisions and why they're in danger. Good action scenes blend the action and reaction in the same shot while some create emotional arcs for the characters during the action scenes. And although spectacles are visually-exciting, they're pointless without characters that viewers care about. Blending emotion and action together in the same scenes is essential to making a great action sequence and they could be difficult and expensive to produce; that's why they're rare, but great actions scenes create unforgettable memories that fans would cherish. This is definitely one of the best video essays I've seen. Watch it below:
