Watch: New Rogue One VFX Reel Shows How Tarkin was Recreated

Industrial Light and Magic has released another visual effects reel for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This one is titled 'Behind the Magic: Recreating Tarkin for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'. Watch it below:

In the video, the special effects team for Rogue One recreates Tarkin through CGI. The late Peter Cushing originally played Tarkin, so in order to have the character in the movie, the VFX team recreated Cushing's likeness with CGI. Guy Henry played Tarkin this time around but motion-capture technology overlaid him with CGI.

It's amazing to see the lengths the visual effects team will go through to have the character's appearance match the original. Most movies would have just recast the role. As weird as it is though, the CGI worked for me. I didn't at all notice Tarkin wasn't real while watching the movie.

The extra work ILM put into the effects paid off. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been nominated for a visual effects Oscar. Do you think it should win the Academy Award this weekend?

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is coming out on Blu-ray April 4.
