Watch Cara Delevingne Kick Butt in First Look at 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets'

A new featurette from the upcoming film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, was featured at the MTV Movie Awards this past Sunday. It showcases a first look at the sci-fi film with some behind-the-scenes footage, cast interviews, and a tease about Rihanna’s mysterious and “cool” role.

Based on writer Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières sci-fi comic book of the same title, Valerian follows Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne’s time-travelling characters in their adventures across the galaxy.

The comic is said to be partially inspired by Star Wars, and I must say releasing Valerian at a time when Star Wars is booming is risky. Director Luc Besson has been sharing behind-the-scenes photos and stunt shots of the film lately and they have reportedly been slightly unnoticed.

From the looks of the featurette though, it appears that Delevingne seems to be enjoying filming the movie saying, “It’s kind of what I always wanted to do.” Besson also seems impressed by the model/actress’ tenacity on set, wanting to do all the stunts herself.

Her playfulness towards MTV host Josh Horowitz cannot go unnoticed as well, making the new Valerian featurette more fun to watch.

From the looks of it, Cara Delevingne is going to be the big star in this film, despite it actually being named after the other lead character.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Synopsis:

Rooted in the classic graphic novel series, Valerian and Laureline- visionary writer/director Luc Besson advances this iconic source material into a contemporary, unique and epic science fiction saga.
Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him.
Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time- uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

Aside from Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, and Clive Owen, the movie also stars John Goodman, Ethan Hawke, Rutger Hauer and Herbie Hancock.

Directed by Luc Besson, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is slated for release on July 21, 2017.
