Watch: 2 Ways Star Wars The Force Awakens Originally Could Have Opened

Star Wars: The Force Awakens originally opened with the First Order’ attack on Lor San Tekka’s home, but rumors had been going around before the film’s release that the film was supposed to open differently. Youtuber Tim Gray has animated the two original opening scenes for the film, and they give us a glimpse of what could have been.

This first opening was drawn from original storyboards of J.J. Abrams, and they give a fantastic twist to the original opening scene for A New Hope. Check it out:

Instead of the cruisers being chased by the destroyer, it actually has them pulling the battered ship through space so they could dump it on the planet of Jakku. Then it would transition to Rey scavenging it for parts.

Next was the more morbid intro that made the rounds on the net—the one where the movie starts with Luke’s severed hand from ESB holding a lightsaber. Check it out:

It looks like the saber actually landed on Jakku, and if I were to make a guess, it would be Lor San Tekka who picked it up and sent it to Maz Kanata. A lot of people think that a severed hand could have been too weird to start the movie with, and a lot are glad that Abrams actually scrapped it.

So far, I’m a fan of the first opening, but The Force Awakens was already chockfull of A New Hope callbacks. Hopefully J.J. Abrams does something riskier for Episode IX.

Star Wars Episode IX comes out Dec. 20, 2019.
