Star Wars: What Happens When A Sith ‘Bleeds’ A Lightsaber Crystal

The Ahsoka novel introduced us to the concept of ‘bleeding’ lightsaber crystals, in the sense that every red lightsaber in canon was a stolen crystal that the dark side user bent against their will. The latest Darth Vader comic gives us a look at the process, and it lead to some pretty interesting reveals.

Star Wars Explained on Youtube discusses:

As it turns out, a lightsaber doesn’t just turn red when a Sith gets its hands on it. They have to be ‘bled’ with intent, and it could lead to some pretty trippy Force visions. When Vader tries to bleed the crystal he procured, he got visions of himself killing the Emperor as well as him giving himself up to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

What’s more, we know that the fortress we saw in Rogue One was actually the site of an ancient Sith sanctuary, and it was the very place where Vader drew all of his anger and hate and poured it into his new lightsaber crystal.

Whether you’re a fan of the classic synthetic Sith crystals or this new process of ‘bleeding,’ it’s always a treat to get more insights on Vader and the person that’s still struggling inside him. Imagine if that scene with Obi-Wan happened for real? That would have blown everyone’s minds.

The next Star Wars film in the lineup is The Last Jedi, and though we have no guarantee of an appearance from Vader, we do know that his emotional grandson will be in the mix.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out Dec. 15.
