Star Wars Virtual Reality Game Full Trailer Released

Last week saw the accidental release of ILMxLab’s Star Wars virtual reality game project titled Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine. Today, we’re finally seeing the full trailer for what could become the future of all games involving the Star Wars universe.

Released via YouTube channel, Road to VR, the trailer for the first ever Star Wars VR game is just pure awesomeness.

Take a look at the trailer for yourself:

Industrial Light and Magic is the experimental arm of the special effects division of Lucasfilm which is now owned by Disney. In the past year, the focus of the visual effects company has been to create an immersive space for the Star Wars franchise.

Trials on Tatooine was supposed to be released together with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but it was delayed due to problems with HTC’s Vive headset, a tie-in project to the game.

The trailer is only less than a minute, but it’s packed with lots of Star Wars goodness that made me feel like I’m on Tatooine myself. I especially liked the lightsaber-wielding part (who doesn’t?) where I could get the chance to fight some Stormtroopers who suddenly show up and start shooting in the viewer's direction. I especially like how R2-D2 is there to offer help and some company. Hopefully, when the game is finished, players get to choose other characters they can fight with.

ILMxLab’s other recent project is their experimental Holo-Cinema, which they brought over to Sundance. The experience was all about exploring the Star Wars and Jurassic Park universes.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I’m sure that at some point in the future, virtual reality would become the norm for all Star Wars video games.

There’s still no official word on the availability of HTC’s Vive headset, but it’s due for completion on April 5. As cool as the game looks, Vive isn’t cheap. It’s available for pre-order on HTC’s website for $799.
