Watch: This Dragon Ball Super Throwback To Vegeta's Epic Scene in Z

Dragon Ball Super might be exploring new concepts these days, with Gods of Destruction and alternate universes now a big part of the series but the show hasn’t forgotten where its roots are. The show has had numerous homages to both Dragon Ball Z and the original Dragon Ball, which has put a smile on many viewers faces. Even the movies have been acknowledged, such as Kale’s Super Saiyan transformation that is eerily similar to Broly.

In Episode 122 of Dragon Ball Super, we saw yet another tribute to Z with Vegeta’s Final Flash on Jiren. This isn’t the first time he’s used it in Super, previously using it in the Universe 6 Tournament against Magenta, but this felt like a proper homage to his battle with Perfect Cell back in Z.

Thanks to Andy Le, we can now see both usages of the Final Flash side by side. Despite the improved animation in Super, there are a ton of similarities to his battle with Cell; from Vegeta goading his foes to stay still, to Cell and Jiren realizing that the move is going to hurt, along with the Saiyan Prince’s arrogant laughter once the attack has been executed, this is a pitch-perfect tribute.

Admittedly, there are a few differences aside from the animation. Cell actually losses part of his body from the move and is in severe pain, before showing Vegeta that he can heal really quick. Jiren, on the other hand, is seemingly down but quickly gets up and blasts Vegeta with a Ki blast. Still, both reactions do break Vegeta’s pride, which must suck for the Saiyan and his fans.

Dragon Ball Super can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
