Lucasfilm Approached David Fincher For Episode VII, His Pitch Was “Ex Machina In Space”

Before J. J. Abram’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens successfully reawakened the Star Wars cinematic franchise, Lucasfilm was pretty quiet for a long time, taking a long rest after finishing off the sequel trilogy. However, though the studio did take a few years till they finally managed to bring out new Star Wars film after Revenge of the Sith, it doesn’t mean Lucasfilm didn’t try.

Before The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm had eight different versions of Episode VII that sadly didn’t come into fruition, including one that from Star Wars creator George Lucas and one from award-winning director David Fincher.

Now, a week after the studio celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the Star Wars franchise, YouTube Channel WhatCulture delivers a video detailing the eight different Star Wars Episode VII ideas that never got rolling.

Check it out down here:

While Lucas’s ideas for Episode VII are pretty much what you’d expect from Lucas – like a direct pick up after Return of the Jedi and a time jump where fans catch up with the adventures of a Luke Skywalker in his thirties, Fincher’s ideas for the revival movie are the most interesting. Straying from the Skywalker Saga, the A.V. Club reports that Fincher’s proposal was that Episode VII be the “the story of two slaves [C-3PO and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters’ folly, the ultimate folly of man.”

It doesn’t sound very Star-Warsy, but the idea of a philosophical film centered around the droids is pretty entertaining. Unfortunately it’s never going to happen, we already have our Force Awakens and everyone is gearing up to see The Last Jedi this year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres on December 15.
