With Disney’s current streak of successes in its live-action classic remakes, such as Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and The Jungle Book, it isn’t any wonder that the media giant is pumping up the heat with a slew of other live-action reboots of classics.
Recently, Disney announced other live-action classic remakes in development and release dates, including Beauty and the Beast, a rumored Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins sequel, Ava DuVernay’s A Wrinkle in Time, Tim Burton’s Dumbo, Lasse Hallstrom’s Nutcracker, Cruella starring Emma Stone, a Tinker Bell filmstarring Reese Witherspoon.
The most recent live-action remake to hit theaters this year is Pete's Dragon, and with the success of its predecessors, the pressure is on for the David Lowery-helmed movie.
Well, Disney just dropped the latest trailer for Pete's Dragon, and it looks more promising than we expected. Take a look:
The movie’s premise is anything but new, but clearly Disney went for the less traditional dragon look for this one. While some fans may be disappointed with the CGI character Elliot, I personally prefer it over the look of the dragons in Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings. It is a children’s film after all. The furry and less-intimidating look makes the dragon more appealing for the kids.
In any case, Disney most likely put a lot of effort in creating the CGI character, but it remains to be seen whether it will cater to the general audience and if it will be as successful as its predecessor, Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book. The movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Keith Urban, who are both making names for themselves in fantasy and science fiction projects. Robert Redford is on board as well, which is a plus for many audiences.
