Stormtroopers have always been a staple in Star Wars, and you simply can’t have an SW movie without them. Just in, Lucasfilm has dropped an official video covering the evolution of the troopers, and we even get a little teaser for The Rise of Skywalker’s new variant, the Sith Trooper.

Check it out:

This year, Lucasfilm hosted a most impressive display showcasing the evolution of the Star Wars stormtrooper. The exhibit included several of the screen-used costumes seen throughout the iconic movie series.  From the classic stormtrooper to new designs featured in the upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, this stunning display examined the production costumes up close and studied the many unique styles deployed throughout a galaxy far, far away.

I absolutely love the new insight that we get when it comes to the design of the troopers. I never realized it before, but the OG trooper was supposed to look like a stylized version of a skull, basically making them look like an army of skeletons. And when it came to variants like the scout trooper, they changed the skull look to make it feel more like a scream. The Deathtroopers were also designed to make them look like they have fangs.

We also get some neat insight on the design of the clone troopers, and they were meant to be a fuse between Boba Fett’s helmet and standard trooper bucket. The First Order design is also neat in a sense they decided to try and make a ‘contemporary’ stormtrooper.

As for the new Sith Trooper, we didn’t really get that much insight, but I’m sure there’s something about their harsh red color. My money’s still on them being a clone army, but instead of Jango Fett, their genetic template is that of Anakin Skywalker.

It’s just my guess, but I’m hopeful I got it right.

Catch Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when it hits theaters Dec. 20.
