Watch: Joker’s Joaquin Phoenix Calls Out Cancel Culture in His Oscars Speech

Joaquin Phoenix had recently won the Oscar for Best Actor for his work on Joker, and a lot offanshave come online to praise him for his speech. Thanks to Variety, we actually get to listen to Phoenix’s short monologue on Cancel Culture.

Check it out:

“I’ve been a scoundrel in my life. I’ve been selfish. I’ve been cruel at times; hard to work with, and I’m grateful that so many of you in this room have given me a second chance. And I think that’s when we’re at our best when we support each other, not when we cancel each other out for past mistakes, but when we help each other grow, when we educate each other, when we guide each other toward redemption, that is the best of humanity.”

Cancel Culture has become a very interesting topic as of late, especially counting the rise of #MeToo Movement. While there are definitely some people who I think deserve to be "canceled," I think there are some people who fall victim to this kind of culture’s unforgiving nature, not to mention the tendency of others to judge too quickly.

Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn had become a victim of Cancel Culture after his old tweets were used to get him fired from GOTG Vol. 3; and most recently Johnny Depp, who had been "canceled" by the internet last year, only to have everyone shocked to find out that Depp was the victim of abuse all along.

Cancel Culture has definitely become a hot-button topic nowadays, but I think it’s something that everyone should try to look into. We don’t want cases like Depp to happen again, where somebody gets judged prematurely, and their careers are ruined before it’s too late.
