[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR POKEMON THE MOVIE: I CHOOSE YOU!]

Pikachu is a pop-culture figure that we all knew and loved for many years, and with Pokemon getting it’s 20th movie, fans were shocked to see him do one thing—talk.

Check out this audience reaction to a screening of Pokemon the Movie: I Choose You!:

Some people may think that this was edited for audiences in America, but as it turns out, the Japanese version of the movie has Pikachu talking as well. It’s certainly a shock for audiences that Pikachu would talk after all this time. What does that mean for the future of the franchise? Will he talk all the time now? Was it just some delusion that Ash was having?

With Meowth being as talkative as he is in the series, it’s certainly not impossible for Pokemon to talk; but it does take a great deal of dedication. Seeing that this is a retelling of Ash’s first adventures with Pikachu, I’m thinking nothing in the series is going to change drastically.

Here’s the movie synopsis:

From Kanto to Alola and everything in between! For over 20 years, the adventures of Ash, a young Trainer from Pallet Town, and his best friend Pikachu have been captivating audiences around the world. Experience the adventure that started it all in Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!,
