Star Wars: ILM Spotlights the Creation of L3-37

The Disney Star Wars movies have been delivering a lot of fun characters when it comes to the droid department. The sequel trilogy gave us BB-8, with K-2SO coming out of Rogue One. Solo: A Star Wars Story gave us the very quirky L3-37, and ILM has released a new video putting her creation in the spotlight.

Unlike K-2 who was a completely CG character, L3 is supposed to be a blend of both practical and special effects. Phoebe Waller-Bridge was made to wear the outer L3 costume over a green jumpsuit, and the post would edit her body out and replace it with wires and "guts."

It’s a very fascinating process, and I’m curious about what other types of droids Lucasfilm has in store for the future.

While I’m not expecting any new droid characters for Episode IX, Jon Favreau has teased in that IG-88 (or at least an IG model droid) will be making an appearance in the show. Since IG-88 just stood still in Empire Strikes Back, I’m assuming this version of the droid will be moving around and causing all kinds of mayhem. Then again, I’m thinking what if they decide to treat him like a Weeping Angel from Doctor Who and just have IG move when no one is looking? I admit it would be funny to see onscreen, but I would also love to see the droid moving around.

No release date has been set for Star Wars: The Mandalorian, but the show is expected to debut on Disney+ sometime this year.
