Honest Trailer Pokes Fun at the Original Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins Returns comes out tomorrow, and Screen Junkies has just released their Honest Trailer take for the original 1964 film starring Julie Andrews.

Meet Mary Poppins, magic nanny and full-blown narcissist who never misses an opportunity to check herself out, doesn’t get close to anyone, and creates a pocket universe full of animals to literally sing her praises.

I have to admit, the trailer does have a point when it comes to all its criticisms, but with Mary Poppins basically a live-action cartoon, the film doesn’t seem as grave as it sounds. I think the point of Poppins is that she’s a very unreal character, and that’s why a lot of the other elements of the film are meant to be ridiculous—especially Dick Van Dyke’s famous ‘English’ accent.

If anything, I’m sure the sequel is going to capture the more positive elements of the original like the catchy songs and dazzling visuals. Just watching the trailers though, I have to say Emily Blunt does get the feel of Andrews’ Poppins really well. She may be friendly when she can, but Mary Poppins is actually quite strict when she needs to be.

With Aquaman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Bumblebee competing for top position in the box office, we’ll just have to see how Mary Poppins Returns fairs against all the other 2018 blockbusters.

Now an adult with three children, bank teller Michael Banks learns that his house will be repossessed in five days unless he can pay back a loan. His only hope is to find a missing certificate that shows proof of valuable shares that his father left him years earlier. Just as all seems lost, Michael and his sister receive the surprise of a lifetime when Mary Poppins -- the beloved nanny from their childhood -- arrives to save the day and take the Banks family on a magical, fun-filled adventure.

Mary Poppins Returns to theaters Dec. 19.
