Darren Aronofsky is a renowned director for his work on Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan, but a lot of people weren’t into his latest project, mother! which came out last year. As part of a fan poll, Screen Junkies has come up with their Honest Trailer for the movie, and it looks like they missed the whole metaphor.

Just in face value, mother! is an admittedly confusing movie, but if you check out the entire allegory behind it, the film can actually come out as pretty clever. You see, the entire film is like a retelling of the Bible’s Genesis with Jennifer Lawrence playing Mother Earth and Javier Bardem playing God.
The movie starts with Bardem “creating” the home a.k.a. Earth, and the arrival of Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer were to signify Adam and Eve. Their son killing his brother was supposed to be Cain and Abel, and the house flooding after the sink broke was supposed to signify “The Great Flood” a.k.a. Noah’s Ark.
The blood stain on the floor was supposed to be the “Original Sin” and the people eating the baby in the end was a clear metaphor for everyone supposedly “eating” the body of Christ—like they do in mass.
Though the metaphors are pretty loose, I think mother! was a pretty clever take on religion and how humans are treating the Earth. By the end, you can feel all the desperation of the Earth as she tried to get rid of everyone by burning the entire place a.k.a. Global Warming.
It’s not a perfect movie, but I think Aronofsky’s message was pretty clear—that is, if you read about the whole allegory behind it. Otherwise, it’s just a movie about a weirded out lady on how she doesn’t want people in her home.
