Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot, Lynda Carter Talk About Impact on Culture & More

Wonder Woman is celebrating her 75th anniversary. But the celebration comes in the middle of some empowering news, but also some disheartening scrutiny.

Just recently, Wonder Woman was named as the new honorary ambassador for empowering women. However, this movie was not positively received, particularly by the staffers, since they deemed that the honor should go to a less-sexualized character.

The negative response doesn't seem to be weak either, as an online petition has already reportedly been conducted. As of writing, it has already received 1,916 supporters.

"It is alarming that the United Nations would consider using a character with an overtly sexualized image at a time when the headlining news in United States and the world is the objectification of woman and girls. The image that Wonder Woman projects (life-size cut outs of which have already appeared at UNHQ) is not culturally encompassing or sensitive—attributes the United Nations expects all its staff members to embody in the core values of respect for diversity."

While the petition does bring up some concerns, that does not mean that Wonder Woman as a character can't be used to propel other causes, such as awareness for gender-based issues.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Wonder Woman actresses Gal Gadot and Lynda Carter have spoken at the event to discuss Wonder Woman's impact on society and culture.

Wonder Woman certainly has quite the effect as a superhero. For one thing, Carter remembers that her casting for the role had been a monumental thing, considering that 40 years ago, women were not expected to hold their own when it comes to TV.

Gadot even gushed about how great she is as a character, especially with the background of what Wonder Woman as a movie will focus on.

"In some magical and mystical way, there lies within each of us Wonder Woman. She is real. She lives and she breathes. I know this because she lives in me, and she lives in the stories that these women tell me, day in and day out."

Hopefully, Wonder Woman will continue to be a voice and a good enough representation of women and their beliefs.

Wonder Woman from DC cinematic universe will be out on June 2, 2017.
