Wizards of the Coast President Discusses Magic: The Gathering's Next Set, Dominaria

The next Magic: The Gathering set Dominaria won't be released until April but Wizards of the Coast President Chris Cocks has already drafted the highly-anticipated set. Dominaria will mark the return to Magic's classic world and is expected to feature nostalgic design and mechanics introduced in the game's early years.

During an interview with Hipsters of the Coast, Chris talked about Dominaria:

"Playing in 1994, 1995, I remember looking at the art on the package going like, wow, this is amazing, really geeking out about it," he said. "Now, revisiting Dominaria for the first time in a decade and a half and looking at the art is amazing…It's kind of like comparing Gawain and the Green Knight to Game of Thrones. Technically, they're both fantasy, but one definitely has much more modern sensibilities. I think that'll be very surprising and pleasing to the people who play the game."

Last December, Wizards of the Coast revealed the first promotional art featuring Karn, Teferi, and Jhoira, confirming the return of the three classic characters to Magic lore. Although Chris didn't reveal Dominaria's story or its mechanics, he said that "the R&D team did a good job of finding an accessibility point for newer or more casual fans that make it relatively easy for them to be able to draft or play limited or build constructed sets with classic fantasy tropes…Like, Hey, I want to play as the white knights or I want to play as the dark paladins or I want to play as wizards from the school of magic, but also having a lot of more highly competitive subtle mechanics that the competitive old-school player will like, and that are really nice references to the past."

It's good to hear that they're aiming to bring back that Magic old school feel. I'm just glad that the set doesn't seem to focus its story on The Gatewatch.
