Will Captain Phasma Be Unmasked in Star Wars: The Last Jedi?

Captain Phasma's appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was disappointing to fans who expected her to have a larger presence in the film. Prior to the film's release, the marketing for the J.J. Abrams film suggested that she will have a Boba Fett-like presence in the film but sadly, the amount of screentime she had let down fans who were expecting to see her kick ass.

Phasma is slated to appear in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Gwendoline Christie even teased that her character's role in the sequel will be more action-driven, but recent rumors say that she will remain masked in the film, potentially never showing her face in the sequel.

Star Wars News Net points out the series of clues shared by a Redditor that hint at Phasma continuing to be shrouded in mystery in The Last Jedi. One of the hints comes from a rumored artist involved with Lucasfilm who said that they were given specific instructions "...you cannot show Phasma unmasked. Captain Phasma's mask stays on during the film so do not send in artwork of Gwendoline Christie's face."

This piece of information might come as a surprise to those who've seen the Vanity Fair photo shoot of Gwendoline Christie wearing her Phasma armor without her helmet on.

The Redditor also wrote: "As a side note, the source also mentioned that, along with the Phasma directive, they were instructed to 'only use official reference material.' Keep in mind that this person is not provided any reference material that isn't available to the general public."

At Comic-Con Chile, Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo might have settled this when he said, "For those of you wondering, I see this as a behind the scenes photo of Gwendoline Christie and not necessarily what Phasma looks like without her helmet. But, I will say that she is a human female."

Take this as a grain of salt for now. Hopefully, the next Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer will provide hints.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is set to release in theaters on December 15, 2017.
