Why Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Chose Not to Make a Big-Budget Marvel or DC Movie

The comic book movie industry has been gaining quite a lot of traction lately among filmmakers and most of those director-writer team-ups have been producing pretty impressive work to boot. It therefore begs the question of which duo will likely join the comic book movie fray. That remains to be seen, but for sure the duo of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg aren't going to be in that list.

Apparently, Rogen and Goldberg are simply too happy with their small-scale TV comic book adaptations that they don't want to get into big movie franchises.

In an interview with Cinema Blend during a recent press day in Los Angeles for the upcoming film Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, which Rogen and Goldberg co-wrote, Rogen was asked whether he is open to making a big screen comic book franchise movie.

He said that he and his writing partner simply prefer working with some degree of freedom that a big budget franchise wouldn't be able to offer.

He said:

Preacher… that's the perfect version of it for us, in that it's a comic book that we love, but there was very few infrastructural strings attached to it, I guess I would say. We're all for having creative partners, but it seems like the way a lot of those movies are structured… they're very producer driven projects and we generally like to be the producers who are driving the projects, so that's what we've found a way to do.The Boystoo, we're working on that now as well.

Apparently, he and Goldberg learned this while making Green Hornet a few years back.

That's what Green Hornet taught us, honestly, was to find a way to do comic books that a) play to the strengths of our sensibilities and b) do not have a lot of kind of strings attached to them as far as kind of overlords. And that's just like because we also like to push things in a way that that generally people are not cool with [laughter] It's probably our fault.

So, it's because of these quite sensible reasons that the duo decided not to enlist with either Warner Bros./DC or Disney/ Marvel Studios.

Well, if they're happy making TV adaptations of Vertigo comics like Preacher and The Boys, they could probably expand those stories more. If they feel like they have more liberty to express their ideas through these adaptations, we could likely expect nothing less than impressive shows to come.

Preacher debuts on AMC starting Sunday, May 22. Meanwhile, Rogen is starring in the upcoming comedy flick Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, to hit heaters this Friday, May 20.
